Voici l'extrait d'un message paru dans la mailing list Smoothwall concernant la sortie de la nouvelle version de cette distribution et faisant état d'un nouveau type de licence non open-source.
SmoothWall Lite

As some of you may have seen on the GPL mailing list we are now working on
the next freely available version of SmoothWall. This will be called
SmoothWall Lite. It will no longer be licenced under the GPL, but will
still be freely available and freely distributable.Because of this it will
be a complete re-write of all existing code. Of course there are
advantages to this! The code will be more efficient and above all secure.

Over the last few months stringent audits in Europe, the US and Australia
have allowed us to tighten the specifications for our new graphical
installer as well as conduct negotiations at the highest level with some
of the largest modem manufacturers on the planet.

We are not going to release a full spec of SmoothWall Lite until it is
released, but rest assured... it will have all the features GPL has, and
more! We will however give you a few bits and pieces to look forward to!

Entire new backbone . sharing little common feel or functionality
with existing 0.9.x SmoothWall product.

2.4 hardened kernel with increased support for Ethernet devices
PROPRIETARY support for major ADSL devices under licence to three major
global manufacturers as well as support continued for Alcatel/Thompson
devices (including PCI Speedtouch DSL modem)

New user management system and authentication suite.

Upgrade path to Corporate Server products

Chargeable modules will also be available as will subscription services
but these are entirely voluntary and do not infringe the right we want you
to have to use SmoothWall Lite free.

Provide a path for SmoothWall Lite users to interact with the global
SmoothWall partners now spread worldwide, suppliers of support, training,
services and hardware.

So how do I find out more ?

To find out the rest you will have to be patient. This does not meant that
support of the exiting 0.9.9 development will no longer continue, security
fixes and other important updates will still be available until the time
SmoothWall Lite is released and beyond for a period. We are loathed to
release more details at this time, but as you.d expect we.re not expecting
anyone to come anywhere near close to managing to compete with the
functionality, security or the fun that SmoothWall brings to networking.

I hope this sounds interesting to people and that they are all looking
forward to installing a new and more powerful firewall in place of their
existing one. SmoothWall GPL is getting very staid in it.s old age and has
proven it.s value. We need to move on and this gives us the opportunity
now removing all the existing components, e.g setup, GUI, and the core
backbone to do what we.ve wanted to do for a long time . command and
conquer.

Why are we NOT releasing Lite under the GPL ?

SmoothWall Lite is licenced under our own licence and contains proprietary
elements that will remain wholly closed. SmoothWall Lite WILL contain
elements and libraries of GPL software and these WILL be distributed with
source under the terms of the GNU Public Licence. Following attempts by
junior former members of the SmoothWall team who left the project last
year to fork the project we decided that being copied was at best
annoying, and at worst a pain in the butt. The forked project use our code
and libraries and our functionality without indicating our rights as
authors and therefore as the FSF has been less than a helpful bedfellow we
are closing our OWN sources including the sources used in the forked
project which we assume will cause the usual level of whining and
detraction from reality that the .so called Community. seem so able to
communicate to each other via newsgroups and online news sites.

This week has seen .open letters. from senior members of the .open source.
community that have caused a fair amount of embarressment to many of us
trying to promote alternative better ways of working, and while the GPL
allows us freedom of speech, and the ability to make a better world, the
FSF and their .band of followers. seem determined to make us look amateur
in the eyes of the rest of the technical community who are the adoptors of
our products.

Moving away from the fear of ridicule is a major factor that we feel is
hugely important to the way that we work. We write Free Software and we
want to continue to do this and if it means we have to change how we work
to safeguard ourselves against the very prophets that promote a better way
of working is both bizarre and we.d hoped until now, un-necessary.

Why are we closing the source ?

As we are the authors of the source it is entirely within our rights to do
this. It also gives us a powerful tool when dealing with modem
manufacturers and OEMs who view the GPL with a fair degree of incredulity
and fear . sometimes quite rightly. By closing our source on the major
core components we can work faster (peer review within our own team is
responsible for over a million SmoothWall installations all over the
world). Also SmoothWall Lite will provide an upgrade path to the Corporate
Server, SmoothTunnel and other PROPRIETARY products from SmoothWall Ltd
the brains behind SmoothWall, and the people who fund your firewall usage.

SmoothWall Ltd is a successful, profitable and wholly owned software house
working with companies globally on protecting networks large and small, as
well as providing valuable resources to the OpenSource community in it.s
costly and continued backing of SmoothWall GPL. SmoothWall Lite will
continue to make major advances as well as make upgrade easier while still
offering entry level firewalling for networks. Making sure that we have
the funds to KEEP THIS FREE is essential . we.d rather NOT charge you for
Lite and we hope you.d rather continue being able to download it, share
it, distribute it freely between your friends and colleagues and the
community.

Closing the source on our own proprietary elements DOES NOT stop this from
happening, but it does allow us to make highly secure firewall devices
that do exactly what we design them to do. Exactly what we.ve been doing
now since August 2000 with such success.

Building on the global success of 0.9.x is a good platform for our
continued growth and we are really quite chuffed to already have a 50mb
core of the new SmoothWall Lite .in the can. so to speak, and the porting
and design aspects are already well under way.
Ixus, it's us !
